Some History of Carthage NC

Carthage is a part of Moore County, North Carolina. As of the year 2020, the population of Carthage was 2,635. The area was first settled in the mid-1780s by a group of Scottish immigrants near Cape Fear Valley. Carthage's activities revolved around the courthouse from the early days till today. The first courthouse was established in 1785 on the banks of Killetts Creek. In 1815, the courthouse moved to its present location. It was called The Red House because of its brick color. However, it collapsed in 1814, and a third courthouse of the area was constructed in the same place as The Red House that remained standing until it burned down in 1889. Though a fourth courthouse was built in the spot, it remained functioning for a very short period.

In 1922 a new courthouse was put up in the center of Carthage. It is the 5th county courthouse for Moore County. The government building and sixth county courthouse were built across the street facing the historical building of the 5th courthouse. Carthage has been fortunate enough to have kept many historic buildings through the years that people around the area can appreciate. The Tyson & Jones Buggy Company was established in 1848, and it remained a major Carthage employer until 1925. This is most likely why the city's surrounding areas have many large mansions that this company most likely made.
