Spring Gardening Tips for Healthy Plants
Green Garden Landscaping • Apr 03, 2022

It’s that time of year where days become longer, winter weather subsides and the sun shines brighter. Spring is a great time to give your home an update. Regardless of whether you are buying, selling, or simply spring cleaning, there are ways to give your house the fresh makeover it deserves.

Gardening is a great activity to boost curb appeal and buyer interest, or just make your home look better. But before you take out the gloves and knee pads, consider these tips to help your garden thrive this season.

Examine your yard

According to HomeLight’s Top Agent Insights for New Year 2022, simple yard maintenance — while relatively inexpensive — is the top curb appeal update that’ll get you the most bang for your buck when it comes time to sell. Remove dead plants, leaves, and other debris in the soil you plan to grow new flowers and vegetables in. Or you can use fully composted yard waste, as it can enhance overall plant growth and health, while also boosting water holding capacity in the soil.

Assess your yard from your trees down to your flower beds. Cut down the previous year’s perennial foliage and throw it into compost. Rake mulch from beds planted with bulbs and refresh mulch in other areas after soil warms. Check everything again, looking closely at fences and walkways for any winter damage.

Refresh

Order new plants such as shrubs, perennials, and trees to fill  gaps or for a fresh start. Analyze your yard and give it a makeover by dusting off the lawn mower and leaf blower. Clear the lawn of any debris and make sure you reseed any problem areas before mowing.

Prepare beds

Whether using an old bed or starting a new bed, you should begin by clearing the soil of any weeds, leaves, or debris. Using fully composted yard waste can improve overall plant health and growth and is also a good way to recycle yard waste.

Smooth a 4-inch layer of compost over soil and cultivate it to a depth of ten to twelve inches with a spading fork. Rake it before planting.

Prune shrubs

Get rid of dead or damaged branches from woody plants such as butterfly bushes, hydrangeas, and roses. Pruning wood damaged from winter after plants resume spring growth, and prune blooming shrubs and trees after flowering. These simple touch ups will make a noticeable difference and keep your garden looking well taken care of. Doing lawn care in your garden and lawn can make it beautiful and great.

Fertilize

When fertilizing, be careful of using too much fertilizer as it can burn roots, reduce their ability to take in water, and cause the plants stress. Use a balanced fertilizer or fish emulsion around trees and shrubs when new growth emerges. Spread high-acid fertilizer around acid-loving shrubs such as blueberries, azaleas and citrus, and begin fertilizing perennials when active growth continues.

Compost

Begin using a compost bin if you haven’t already. Rake leaves and collect debris from the garden. Find a balanced amount of brown and green compost materials and chop them up to further along decomposition.

Mulch

One of the simplest ways to keep your garden looking fresh is applying a fresh layer of mulch. It makes your garden look clean, and if you mulch before the weeds have time to sprout, it will help keep weeds away and retain moisture. Installing a mulch in your garden and putting it in every plant will make your lawn and garden beautiful.

Insects can be useful for many things, but they can also put your plants under stress. Viruses and bacteria can enter plants through openings caused by bug damage. A few bugs can also act as a transport for viruses, spreading them to other plants. Getting rid of them is a must, hiring a pest control experts can help you get that job done easy and fast.
