What is aeration?
Aeration expunges thousands of small cores or clods of soil about one inch to three inches in length from your lawn. These soil fragments “melt” back into the lawn after a few rainfalls, blending with whatever thatch exists on your lawn. The holes created by core aeration catch fertilizer and water. Turf roots simply cultivate toward these growth pockets and condense in the process.
What are the benefits of Aeration service?
The single greatest result of aeration is that compacted soil becomes loose, which unleashes a cascade of events that foster healthy grass:
Turf roots can penetrate and spread easily in loose soil, forming the network needed for grass to withstand summer heat and drought.
Openings punched into soil and thatch allow oxygen to permeate the grass root zone environs. Oxygen helps prevent the spread of fungal diseases and enhances the growth of microorganisms that digest lawn thatch.
An aerated lawn also permits fertilizer and water to reach plant roots, which favors healthy growth.
What is Thatch?
Grass plants naturally spread over soil, and occasionally, parts of individual turf plants die and begin to decompose. The thin layer of dead and decomposing bits of grass that lies between actively growing shoots and soil is called thatch. A moderate thatch layer is actually beneficial, insulating soil from sunlight and reducing water evaporation.
If thatch builds up to more than one-half inch, it begins to interfere with water, fertilizer and oxygen absorption by soil and grassroots. When a thick thatch layer is present, turf actually roots into the thatch, which offers no nutritional support—and further weakens the lawn.
When should be done?
Annual or semiannual aeration is recommended for all lawns, especially those with thatch buildup. For warm season grasses, aeration should be done during late Spring. The Fall is the best time to treat cool-season lawns, like Fescue grass.
What is liquid aeration?
Our new product N-Ext Air-8 0-0-5 ® Liquid Aerator is designed to break up and loosen topsoil and encourage deeper rooting to drive more oxygen into the topsoil profile. It provides deeper penetration of water and roots, it can be done anytime during the growing season, covers the entire lawn and there’s no need of markings.
Lawn fertilization and Weed control services should involve both pre-emergent and post-emergent applications to prevent weed emergence and to control invasive weeds in and after the summer. Green Garden Landscaping is equipped with calibrated machinery to apply the proper amount of product to eliminate weeds.
Fertilization is also an important part of a weed control plan. Not only is a well-fertilized lawn healthier and greener, but it is also stronger to prevent weed infestation, disease, and drought. Plus, healthy lawns give back to the environment by producing oxygen, cooling the air during hot weather, and trapping and absorbing urban dust and pollution.
