Watering your new lawn seed

You are ready to invest a good amount of your precious time, money, and efforts to grow a fallow land to a lush green lawn. However, questions like how often should I sprinkle enough water to my lawn? How often should you watch your grass seeds and how much ? What tools should I use to water the seeds evenly?

Well, the answer to all your questions is a well-managed watering schedule. Just throwing gallons of water will not turn new emerging grass seed into dense grass for your lawn. So to avoid damaging new grass seed from over, under, or uneven watering, the following points should be considered:

  • Avoid overwatering, as it can result in muddy puddles. This leads to uneven distribution of grass seeds and allows seeds to float on the water and fallow.
  • Leaves the mushy soil, which is not ideal for new grass seed.
  • Water less in shaded areas, which means areas that don’t dry out often don’t require frequent watering compared to areas that dry more often due to direct exposure to the sun.
  • Avoid using inadequate or blocked sprinklers to water your lawn, which may lead to uneven watering.
  • A proper watering schedule should be followed to avoid underwatering the new seed, which may dry out the grass seed later on.
  • For more fruitful results divide the watering schedule into two or three times a day. In other words, set the watering frequency based on how often the grass dries out.

Let’s now discuss the step by step appropriate way of watering new grass seeds.

When is the Best Time to Water New Grass Seeds?

Early Morning

Early morning time is considered to be the best time to watering new grass seeds because there is less sunlight to avoid evaporation and at that time there is comparatively less wind blow. To be specific, 4:00 AM to 10:00 AM is the most ideal time of watering.

Night Time

Watering at night makes your lawn more tolerant to drought and heks the roots of the grass to grow deep into the ground.

How Often to Water New Grass Seeds?

Watering new grass seeds depend on various important factors like time, location, and type of seeds. The germination process results best only if the watering schedule is following thoroughly.

Time

  • Watering several days before the planting process starts and recommended water saturation level of watering is 6 to 8 inches.
  • Watering immediately after bowing plant seeds to moisten the soil. Remember to give water 5 to 10 times at once.

Location

  •  The location of seeding is the key factor to determine the frequency of watering. Water twice per day if you are not excepting any rainfall.

Type of Seeds

For Regular Seeds applying 1 to 3 times water as compared to several times a week because it can make roots shallow and less tolerant to drought. Also, consider the watering level to 1 inch depending upon the time and location of seeding.

For Drought Resistance Seeds, the watering process would be different as compared to regular seeds. Owing to its tolerance to drought it usually requires about 30% less water perennially.

How Can You Understand When the Grass Needs Water?

Progression Test: Monitor the progress of the lawn. Your grass needs water if it doesn’t grow instantly, and if it lushes out immediately, it doesn’t require frequent watering.

Rough and Frizzy Grass Tip: If looking at your grass reminds you of dry, rough, and frizzy hair, then it badly needs Rough and Frizzy Grass Tip: If looking at your grass reminds you of dry, rough,       and frizzy hair then it badly needs a good amount of moisture. Moist the soil immediately to keep the grass hydrated.

Change in Grass Color: Water immediately if you find dried patches on your lushly green lawn.

How to Measure the Right Amount of Watering for Grass Seeds?

Measuring with Container: If you are unsure about the depth of watering, place an inch-deep container at multiple places in your lawn, start your sprinkler, and check the water collected in the containers to measure the level of water sprinkled on the soil. This method calculates the adequate running time of the sprinkler to water the right amount of water to the new grass seeds.

Relying on Mother Nature: Not only does it save you money on your water bill, but it also measures the right proportion of water needed for your lawn. Just calculate the level of rain.

Some Imperative Watering Instructions for New Lawns

Watering process for New Lawns:

-   Water too often to new lawns; water daily for 1 to 2 times daily to retain the soil moisture.

-  Until the grass grows 1 inch long, take good care of it, and avoid drying out the ½ inch of the soil.

-  Once the grass grows 1 inch, start watering alternative day until it turns into a lush green lawn.

-  Once it turns into a dense lawn, watering twice a week would be more than sufficient.

Sprinkler & Irrigation System Instructions:

-  Regular audits of the irrigation system should stand first on your priority list because once your landscape develops, it may block your irrigation system by bushes and large trees.

Adjust the watering speed. If it is too fast, check that it should not spread water through the streets. Instead, turn off the sprinkler for some time to get the water absorbed into the soil and then turn the sprinkler again.

Drought Tolerance Instructions:

-  Plant drought-resistant grass such as Zoysia grass and Bermuda, etc. for less watering.

- Keep grass level taller because it has deeper that looks up moisture for a longer time period and doesn’t require frequent watering.
